Unbeaten Horse of the Year candidate ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) traveled five furlongs in 1:01 2/5, breezing, over Hollywood Park's Cushion Track on Sunday, one day after owners Jerry and Ann Moss announced that their superstar mare would return to racing in 2010.
Zenyatta was originally retired following her rousing triumph in the November 7 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), where she engineered a last-to-first drubbing of world-class males and extended her record to 14-for-14. Plans at that time called for her to ship to Kentucky to begin her broodmare career.
After Zenyatta continued to fire off three half-mile works for trainer John Shirreffs, however, rumors began to fly that maybe her racing days weren't over quite yet. Jerry Moss confirmed Saturday that Zenyatta would not retire, but rather continue racing as a six-year-old in 2010.
Regular rider Mike Smith is thrilled with the prospect of teaming up with Zenyatta again.
"She definitely knows who I am," Smith said. "Without a doubt, I think she does. If you spend enough time around these horses, they get to know you. She knows when she sees me, she's going to get to do something. Whenever I get on her back, she gets excited and starts dancing. |
"Her comeback is definitely great for racing. She's a star, and people love to watch her run. She's doing great and she's happy and healthy. Hopefully, she'll stay that way and keep on winning."
On Sunday morning, Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella also commented on the Mosses' decision.
"It's the greatest thing to happen to racing in years, that they decided to run her again," Mandella said between training chores at Santa Anita. "It's not like she's ever been abused. John Shirreffs is not going to do that. She's lightly raced. What's the point of retiring her?
"I think it's a great thing for everybody; maybe not for the people who have to run against her."
